Once again, The Brotherhood Of Appreciating Repeal Day (B.O.A.R.D.) is happy to announce... their 2010 Repeal Day Celebration and Benefit Beer Taste with proceeds benefiting the Shenango River Watchers.

WHAT:
4th Annual Repeal Day Celebration and Beer Taste Benefit.

WHEN:
Sunday, December 5th - The Beer taste pours from 4 to 7pm with a cash
bar open during and later into the evening.

WHERE:
The Corinthian, 47 Vine Street, Sharon, PA 16146

WHY:
The event will raise money for the Shenango Valley River Watchers while promoting an appreciation for fine craft beers made available through local beer distributors and microbreweries.

The B.O.A.R.D. is a loosely affiliated fraternal organization founded by a small group of friends who enjoyed good beer and good times with higher a goal to make Repeal Day an annual celebration with a noble cause.

Repeal Day marks the repeal of the 18th amendment to our constitution, representing the end of a 13 yearlong ban on the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages in the United States. With the help of several local distributors and microbreweries, we have put together Western PA's fourth annual Repeal Day celebration since 1933. Participants will enjoy samples of a 50 craft brews poured by experts that pride themselves on the craft. Participants are also encouraged to dress in 30s era attire as the Walnut Lodge Players and live music from Max Schang and the Gypsy Swingers promise to make it a party of true 1933 proportions. The Gypsy Swingers play the 1930's style music of French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, an infectious foot-tappin' swing, played on acoustic and electric instruments. The group blends the jubilant swing of early New Orleans Jazz with the deep passion of gypsy music, accompanied by female vocals, period style drums, swingin' piano and upright bass.

A light dinner as well as a silent auction of beer paraphernalia will provide diversions for all.

The Shenango River Watchers are a non-profit watershed group founded to clean up, preserve and protect the environmental, scenic and recreational attributes of the Shenango River. For more information about the River Watchers visit their website at

New Beer's Eve! B.O.A.R.D. Membership Drive Event

Literally "Join us" as we toast one to legal beer and New Beer's Eve! The Apollo Maennerchor, Sharon, will feature "craft 3.2 beer" specials as well as a sandwich lovingly prepared by Helmut Schumacher. The public (21 & over) is welcome and those wishing to join or maintain membership with the Brotherhood of Appreciating Repeal Day may pay their $10 annual dues.

April 7th marks the anniversary of the 1933 modification of the Volstead Act, where beer was made legal again after 14 long years of National Prohibition. Well, legal up to a point: up to 3.2% alcohol by weight, to be exact. (That’s 4% by volume.) Basically FDR found a way to get 3.2 beer off the list of banned beverages and put the brewers back to work!

This was one step toward reviving a depressed economy as well as one step toward the Repeal of the eighteenth amendment that took place on December 5th, 1933.

Saturday's Oktoberfest at the Apollo Maennerchor was a blast. The event sold out and our first keg (Paulaner Oktoberfest-Märzen) kicked way earlier than anyone anticipated. Thank you John Eaton for making the drive as we picked up a keg of Sam Adams Octoberfest which carried us the rest of the night! The food was superb and every bit authentic. Gemütlichkeit was the word to describe the spirit of festive camaraderie. Thanks to all the guys and girls that helped to pull it off.

Mike was attending his homebrewer club's monthly meeting and had just old them he couldn't make the camping trip scheduled for the next day because his wife wouldn't let him go.

After listening to the jeers and other derisive remarks from his fellow homebrewing friends Mike left to go back home to his wife.

When Mike's friends started arriving to set up camp the next day, who should be there but Mike, sitting up in front of his truck, tent up, homebrew in hand, camp oven roast stewing away in a hot bed of coals.

"How did ya talk your wife into letting you go Mike?" "I didn't have to" was Mike's reply.

"When I left the meeting I went home and slumped down in my chair with a beer to drown my sorrows. Then my wife snuck up behind me and covered my eyes and said, 'Surprise'!" When I peeled her hands back she was standing there in a beautiful see-through negligee with rope under her arms and she said, "Carry me into the bedroom, tie me to the bed and you can do whatever you want."

"So here I am!"

That's what was proposed and supported at the March Brotherhood of Appreciating Repeal Day meeting last night at Sharon's own Apollo Maennerchor club. In addition to the annual observance of Repeal Day, the group aspires to hold an event for each season. Inspired by the beauty and charm of the near century old Maennerchor club, the B.O.A.R.D. is planning an Oktoberfest celebration in September of '09. Stay tuned for more. Penn Brewery, The Famous Final Scene

So long, old friend...

Since 1986, the Penn Brewery has been the "last stop" as we would leave Pittsburgh and head north on 79 toward home. Now the historic brewery, as we know it, will close sometime in February. Members of the B.O.A.R.D made a final visit last evening for dinner and some fine authentic german lagers. I especially liked the kaiser pils.

Thursday night. Tom's house was decorated for it's yearly bacchanalia of peace on earth and good will to men as he hosted the December B.O.A.R.D. meeting for us to debrief on this past Repeal Day and plan for the next. There to was a vast array of homebrews to sample, both Tom's as well as some contributed brews. All were enjoyed fervently as we washed down a spiral ham that Tom had lovingly prepared. Thanks Tom. Ok, the time and date are set for this year's Repeal Day Beer Taste. It's, of course, Dec 5th, 2008 at the Corinthian in downtown Sharon. Nick, Tom, and John Mik met with their great staff last night. The time for this year's event is from 6pm to 11pm with the beer taste lasting until 9pm and a cash bar open until 11pm. Some wanted longer and some wanted it shorter but in the end we came to an agreement that seemed to make sense and everyone seemed happy with the times. It will be another great event this year. Tickets will go on sale soon and there are a limited number this year so see a BOARD member to get your ticket you do not want to miss this event. The price is $25.

July's meeting was held on the patio at Tully's. The evening featured high evening temps (80s), cornhole, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Summerfest, and as a special treat, some of Bob Bero's Hop Candy.

The June meeting at Our Gang's yielded a strong turnout and a good time. While many of us were hoping to catch a pint of Erie's Misery Bay IPA, we were not surprised to find that it had already kicked and replaced with Erie's Maibock. It was super fresh as well as the dogfish 60 minute tapped that afternoon. Discussed affairs relating to our upcoming 12/5 event which is sure to be a winner. Erie Brewing has committed to be part of the Repeal Day event (thank you Jim Hicks). Congrats to the Our Gang's gang for being crowned the Shenango Valley "Wing King" for 2008.

A bit about the picture...

This is Jack's Grille of Sharon's Chestnut Street in 1957. What a place. Not only could you get the sardine platter (.45) and 6 pack of Simon Pure (6 cans for .85), the Pirates always won when watched on that television up in the corner. To go back? I'm not sure... The world was not ready for the generously hopped beers crafted today and I'm not sure I'd be permitted to take a case of Green Flash IPA into Jack's.

Hop Princess

Drink Tax

By now just about everyone knows about Allegheny County's drink tax. For those of you who do not it's 10%. So keep this in mind when traveling to Pittsburgh. There is a website trying to stop it. http://www.stopdrinktax.com/ I do not know about you but I think that is out of control. Can the government just add taxes whenever they would like? Is it only a matter of time before Mercer County taxes our drinks? I know there isn't a tax on clothes in PA because everyone needs them but doesn't just about everyone need a drink once in awhile too? Below is a video from the Pittsburgh Pirates home opener. There was a protest outside the stadium, not for the Pirates poor play but against the drink tax. A beer inside the stadium will cost you $6.75. That's $6.75 for one not a six pack.

Stadium Beer Prices

Saturday night, I attended the Mahoning Valley Thunder arena football game at the Chevy Center in downtown Youngstown. For my money, AF2 games may be the most enjoyable sporting event I've been to with the low cost ticket prices and the location close to home, you can't beat it if you're into football. It's about the tenth event I've gone to at the arena. And everytime, I come away in disbelief. How can they charge $5.50 for a Miller Lite or MGD bottle? It's not just the Chevy Center that charges high prices for beer, it's every ballpark, stadium, arena across the country. In fact, last summer I went to a baseball game in Detroit and they charge $8 per beer at Comerica Park. 8 bucks! For eight dollars, I can get a pitcher of good beer at Our Gang's. Although as Nick has pointed out with the price of water and hops going up who knows how long that will last. The Board should look into this practice and come up with a solution to the problem of high prices at arenas and stadiums. Don't get me wrong, I've bought a round or two at a ballpark, but the price of beer shouldn't be more than the ticket price for the event.

Just as a side note, for those of you who have not attended an event at the Chevy Center, you should check one out. They have had several good concerts in the past along with sporting events. It's only about 25 minutes from Hermitage and parking is always free. There isn't a bad seat in the house and with only about 5,000 seats you are always on top of the action. The Arena features your basic beer selections on the main concourse. If you are looking for something different they do feature a $8 martini at a full service bar along with other mixed drinks. The VIP lounge is very nice with a full glass wall where you can look out over the downtown. This lounge also features a few more beers on tap but nothing that will knock your socks off. Just outside the arena is several different types of bars with (dare I say) BW3-your basic franchise, Invibe-more upscale martini bar with a special back room that is actually an old bank vault, the Core-dance club, and for the younger college age crowd the Cell. The Cell is located right next to the Mahoning County Jail which is a nice touch.

B.O.A.R.D. Minutes- February 2008

At the February B.O.A.R.D. meeting we had the opportunity to meet with a special guest, Mr. Geoff Marenchin, a musician who was present at Iceland's first Repeal Day in 1989. March 1st, 1989 is the date when a 75-year-long prohibition of beer was lifted. Pubs, restaurants, and clubs all around Reykjavik are especially wild this night. Geoff was kind enough to share some postcards mailed to his father while he experienced the historic event. Join the B.O.A.R.D. this Friday evening (2/29/08) at Chestnut Street Cafe as we celebrate Leap Day as well as the eve our Icelandic brothers and sisters Repeal Day!
Anyway, the Thursday meeting had a good turnout as we shared pitchers 60 minute IPA and Victory Weizenbock at Our Gang's Lounge. Cheers!

First official meeting of 2008 was held at Our Gang's Lounge thursday night. The dogfish 60 min IPA kicked early with no reinforcements. The old Yule log remained lit as we chewed on the remaining St. Nikolaus bock and Mad Elf for the remainder of the evening. Although our next Repeal Day Celebration is some 328 days, and a leap day, 329 days away, it became clear that we must find a way to observe our Icelandic brothers repeal of prohibition of March 1st, 1989. March 1st is only a month a way. Let us tip one for our friends in Reykjavik.

The Race Was On

The Frostbite Foot Race was a success, dampened only somewhat by the rain. Margie dogs, pizza, and endless varieties of fried cheeses were just some of the fare greeting us at the various stops. Frostbite

It's been awhile but the BOARD is getting back together and the blog will be updated again. Sort of. Many of us are meeting for the annual Frostbite Foodtaste Footrace. Hope everyone has been training because it can be a long one.

Participating in this year's event are the ACT, 804, Billy's Black & Gold, Our Gang's Lounge, Side Pocket Cafe, The Wave, The Marigold, Chestnut St. Café, Quaker Steak & Lube, an outdoor "Tailgate Stop" catered by Penn Pilsner and Basilone's of Farrell and Tully's. The final destination of the event will be Tully's where participants can warm up and watch the awards ceremony at 10 p.m.

I did some research to try and compare the valley's first repeal day celebration of 1933 with our most recent attempt honor the day...

The 12.6.1933 edition of the Herald story was titled, "State Receives Repeal Calmly: Wild Demonstrations Fail to Materialize". As it turned out, our forefathers did not have the time that we did to plan an event, and it was difficult to secure any real quantities of good liquor. The Pennsylvania general assembly was slow to define how they would control (restrict) the distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages. Their act actually passed the day after the repeal of prohibition. Leave it to Pennsylvania to miss the first Repeal Day.

I had a great time at our event, to be known as the 74th, even if it lacked wild demonstrations.

Beer Sighting: Holiday Seasonals

We are well into the time that the holiday seasonals will be appearing.

I found 3 at Chestnut Street Cafe:
The St. Nikolaus Bock (Penn Brewing), Celebration Ale (Sierra Nevada), and Christmas Ale (Great Lakes) are all pouring.

I have it on good authority that as of this post, Our Gang's is putting on Erie Brewing's Ol' Red Cease and Desist Wee Heavy Scottish Ale. Georgia's City Lights also put this on tap last week. It's quite strong at 10.1% ABV, so be careful as to not shoot your eye out.

First American Brewery to Produce a Lager

Believe it or not, the Iron City Brewing Company was the first Amercian Brewery to brew a lager. I know, it's hard for me to believe it too. They are also the second oldest brewery in the United States. IC features nine beers. According to their website, they are the inventors of aluminum beer bottles.

Santa’s Private Reserve

With the Holidays right around the corner, why not start sampling the Christmas Brews. This week's brewery feature takes us to Newport, Oregon. Home to the Rogue Brewery. They offer a Holiday beer called Santa's Private Reserve. It is a lot like their Saint Rogue Red but has double the hops. If you're not in the mood for something seasonal don't fear, Rogue most likely has something you will enjoy. They offer a Chipolte Ale, Chocolate Stout and many more. Check out their site.

Tonight, let's highlight the Breweries that will be featured at this year's Repeal Day Beer Taste. First, most of us know about the Old Country Brewery in Slippery Rock. I profiled them a couple of weeks ago. Here is there website again.....http://www.northcountrybrewing.com/welcome.htm

A Holiday in the Making...

Although no members of the B.O.A.R.D. have been nominated to the Council of Legendary Figures just yet, plans for the Valley's first Repeal Day Celebration since 1933 are taking shape and tickets are selling rather well.
Just tonight I dropped off tickets and signs to M&M Beer and Chestnut St. Cafe. I'll get them to Erme's tomorrow. John, the signs and tickets look great!
Beers for the event will be provided through the generosity of M&M Beer, Vecenie and Erme Distributors, as well as the Dogfish Head, Erie, North Country, Victory, and Voodoo Breweries.

Oldest Brewery in the World

This week's brewery tour takes us to Germany. Home to the Weihenstephan Brewery which claims to be the oldest brewery in the world. It started brewing beer in 1040. I had the pleasure of tasting their German style Hefeweizen beer last weekend and really enjoyed it. Their Crystal wheat beer was the Grand Champion of the Australian International Beer Awards 2007. Beer Sighting: Our Gang's Lounge

Just want to express my endorsement of a sweet lineup of four fine beers at this Sharpsville Avenue establishment:

Left to Right from the patron end of the bar you'll find Blue Moon, Dogfish Head 60 min IPA, Stoudt's Oktoberfest, and the Heritage Alt of Erie Brewing CO...

Certainly something for everyone and all the beers appear to be moving to assure a fresh pint.

I had not been there for a while, they've installed a new smoke-eater system, and the place has an overall new look. Check it out.

Also, Repeal Day plans are solidifying... So far we have confirmed Erme's, Vecenie, and M&M Beer as supporting distributors. Our breweries consist of Dogfish Head, North Country of Slippery Rock, and Erie Brewing Company!!! Tickets are being printed and will be available soon.

Located in Slippery Rock, PA. Jodi and Bob McCafferty turned the old coffin making shop into the brewery in 1998. Gregg Kristophel did a great job with the woodwork inside the building. With more than a dozen beers to choose from everyone will find something they will enjoy. Your best bet is to order the sampler. You get to taste just about everything and the staff also has a strong knowledge of their beers. I know most of the BOARD has visited the brewery at least once. I would give The North County Brewing Company 5 out of 5 kegs.

Local Beer Tournament

I haven't made it out to any local places this month but just wanted to add something to the Blog. I did, however, run across a new brew (new to me at least). I really enjoyed. It's called Yuengling Premium from the oldest brewery in the country. I've added the link to the brewery's website.

No, this is not a photo from the last B.O.A.R.D. Meeting. This is the staff of the Union Brewing Company of Sharon, Circa. 1905, who proudly produced 50,000 barrels of their ales and lagers annually. Most of these guys would have lost their jobs when prohibition hit in the following decade.

Down on Chestnut St. there is work underway on a new 6-pack shop that is due to open soon.

We will host our October meeting there on Thursday the 18th.

Thinkers, Not Just Drinkers

Welcome!

This site is dedicated to our pursuit to indoctrinate the annual celebration of Repeal Day into our valley’s culture. Repeal Day, or the anniversary of the repeal of the 18th amendment to our constitution, represents the glorious end of a 13 yearlong ban on the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages in the United States.

It all started with a few (or more) really great beers, some great friends, and a notion to celebrate both on some higher level.

With that…

Be it resolved that this Brotherhood of Appreciating Repeal Day, also known as the B.O.A.R.D., shall exist to fuel the ongoing appreciation, respect, and passion for quality beer and to celebrate, as its high-water mark, the annual observance of Repeal Day in this fair Shenango Valley, western Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio.

So now that the formalities are safely out of the way, I want to thank all the B.O.A.R.D. members that made it out to Chestnut last night. I had a great time and it appears that we're making progress in planning a great event. With proceeds helping out the Shenango River Watchers, we can rest assured that there will be clean water for the all beers brewed downstream.
